A survey by a security company reveals that 170 new infected PCs can be discovered on the Internet every day.

Internet security company CipherTrust has announced the introduction of its new ZombieMeter system, which monitors infected traffic worldwide. According to CipherTrust, the new system can not only be used to assess the number of infected PCs, but is also excellent for detecting new and emerging threats.

Zombie computers are PCs, most often with a broadband Internet connection, that have previously been infected with a virus or worm. Attackers can use these computers to perform Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks or to send unsolicited electronic mail (spam).

CipherTrust discovers an average of 172 new zombie computers a day. Of these, 26 percent are in Europe, 20 percent in the U.S., and 15 percent in China. According to the company, investigations show that networks of zombie computers are a growing threat and more serious steps need to be taken to prevent them from spreading.
