Introductory
I've been eyeing battery-powered air blowers or blowers for a while. I was sure I could use them for what, but I wasn't sure if these devices were really effective. The other question was whether the air blowing would be enough for me or if I should look for something that could also be used as a vacuum cleaner.
The end of my thinking, of course, was that I looked for a relatively cheap machine and ordered it. In this article, I will introduce this blower and, of course, tell you how well it worked for me.
Accessories and appearance, or what a battery-powered blower looks like
The box of the battery-powered blower is simple and, in my opinion, a rather ugly shade of green. Of course, this should not deter you from buying it, because the main thing is inside. And there is quite a lot inside, and the things inside are not superfluous.
The gun-shaped machine itself comes with 5 blower heads, a USB cable, and of course a short manual. Among the heads, there is a brush tube, two mattress blowers, and two reducers. You can guess from this that the device can be used for many things.
The “gun” itself measures 101 x 63 x 165 millimeters and weighs half a kilo. This size and weight includes the battery and motor. Fortunately, this machine also has a USB C charging port, so you can charge it with a million and one chargers you might find at home.
The quality of the battery-powered blower's accessories is not bad, if we look at the wall thickness and the hardness of the plastic, but when you touch it, it really seems like the manufacturer is working with recycled materials. I would like to note that this is more of a good point than a bad point, since apart from the appearance and the touch, there are no disadvantages to the thing, and the usability is not affected by this.
The gun also shows that it's not a piece of space technology, there aren't a thousand LEDs, there aren't a thousand buttons. One LED that lights up in the front, a small one hidden by the charging port that shows whether it's discharged or charged, and a power button.
The plastics are a bit more pleasant to hold than the accessories, but we can't talk about something of Apple (or Xiaomi) quality here either. I'll note that it would have been strange to get something like this for this much money, so I haven't experienced anything surprising so far. Let's see the specifications and then the test!
Paper form, or what a battery-powered blower can do
Since the manufacturer does not provide any information about the battery of the cordless blower (I found a picture that shows a 6000 mAh capacity), I quickly took the gadget apart. Inside, I found a pack made of 3 18650 cells connected in parallel, with a capacity of 2 Ah. The charging voltage was 12,6 volts. According to the manufacturer, it takes 3,5-4 hours to charge from zero to 100 and the device can operate for 40-45 minutes on a single charge.
The motor part lives in a separate housing inside the machine, I didn't want to take it apart, it seems to be glued and sealed, so I didn't want to ruin it just to find out what kind of motor is inside, since I want to use it.
What we do know is that the motor is brushless and operates at a speed of 51 revolutions per minute. This may seem like a lot, but it is not at all, more normal hair dryers already have motors that operate at 000 revolutions, no matter how incredible this may be to a layman.
Unfortunately, we don't get any information about the air delivery capabilities of battery-powered blowers, and I don't know how to measure that. Once upon a time, for a larger fan test, I rented an instrument for such measurements, and I built a test bench. Well, it wasn't cheap or easy, but I didn't have the time or inclination to repeat it now because of a machine, sorry.
Another important piece of information is that 3 speeds can be selected during operation. I think I've covered everything important, let's get to the test!
What can a battery-powered blower be used for?
Well, I basically bought the gadget for dust removal. Here I will also answer whether I bought a vacuum cleaner. No, in the end I ended up with a simple blower, so I thought that would be enough for me.
What do I use it for? Well, several things.
I have several cameras, and I also have a small astronomical telescope. One of the tasks with these is cleaning the objective and the lenses. Of course, you can wipe them with a very soft cloth, but if you wipe them, no matter how soft the cloth is, you will “plow” micro-grooves with the dust, so cleaning with air is easier and better. The second use for me is cleaning the stuff that comes for testing. Unfortunately, the plastic parts are dust magnets, and this is quite a problem for close-up pictures. It simply looks ugly if the photographed thing is covered in dust.
Until now, I've been constantly wiping these while taking photos, but this isn't the right way. If I use a wet wipe, it can leave a mark on the plastic, and if I use a dry one, the plastic surface becomes statically charged and attracts even more dust. What's the solution? Of course, the air blower, which I can use to clean the surfaces nicely before taking photos.
The third, though not very frequent use is to dust my computer. The machine is on the floor, I have to clean it every six months. Of course, I could use compressed air for this, but if I ever get/have an air blower, I can use it for this job too.
What I won't use it for (and unfortunately I can't try it) is inflating mattresses. There is one head for regular rubber mattresses and another for boats, pools, etc., but I don't have a mattress or a boat. But it's good to know, if I did, I could inflate them with the gadget.
Why didn't I buy a vacuum cleaner?
Because I have a small handheld vacuum cleaner, it didn't make sense to spend extra money on the vacuum function. Plus, no matter how good these small vacuum cleaners are, they don't have much power, their container is small, so the area of use is quite narrow. In short, I didn't feel the need for the vacuum function.
How effective is the battery-powered blower?
Well, what most people will be interested in is whether it can replace compressed air. I think it definitely cannot. That is, only partially.
Compressed air bottles come out of the extremely narrow tube with such force that they can often break up and blow out dust that has "encrusted" on the cooling fins. Well, an air gun can't do that.
I also measured the usage time on a single charge. At least I measured it on the highest setting, because I think that most of us (like me) will use the machine at this speed. The factory data says that the operating time can be UP TO 40 minutes. I already thought that this could be done at the lowest power, which turned out to be true, since the machine turned off after 11 and a half minutes on the highest speed.
I note that as the battery capacity decreases, the rpm also decreases somewhat, for this reason alone I think that most of us will not skimp on the battery, because as the charge decreases, the lower rpm will be even lower.
This doesn't mean it's useless, because for example, I achieve perfect results by slightly loosening the dust on my computer's motherboard and video card with the brush head, and it also removes dust almost completely from the fins of the processor cooler. Of course, this also requires that I don't clean my computer every three years, because then this gun would no longer be enough to save me.
The battery-powered blower is definitely suitable for dusting my lenses and binoculars, as well as for blowing dust off test items before taking photos.
So, to sum up the experience: If you always need the power of a compressed air can, then it is not worth buying such a gun, but if less air is usually enough, then it may be worth getting one in addition to the compressed air, as it is much cheaper than compressed air. The price of it is 1000-2000 forints per can, depending on the manufacturer, so it is not an issue.
As I wrote, unfortunately I couldn't try inflating a mattress, but it could be useful for that too, especially if you have a big family and a lot of mattresses. You can take it out of your beach bag and inflate everything with it without getting tired or dizzy. It can't be bad for that either, I remember old times when I would have gladly used it, only back then such a device didn't exist.
Summary
I know it wasn't a long article, but that's all there is to this gadget, I don't think I need to write more about it.
I am basically satisfied with it, it worked perfectly for the purposes I wanted to use it for. I should note that I did not expect anything else, I did not expect anything more or less in terms of capabilities, so it did not disappoint, but it did not cause great joy either. It does what it says, no more, no less.
Also, I would like to note again that although the promotional images say that you don't need to use a can of compressed air anymore, this is not true, or rather I would say that it is a bit of an exaggeration. In general, it may be true in the case of not old dirt and dust, but there are cases (I remember quite a few of them) when what you can do would have been completely insufficient, when compressed air was needed to clean a machine properly.
Well, that's it in short, I left the price for the end. You can order the battery-powered blower from the Czech warehouse, the price is BGAIRDUST01 coupon code 8853 HUF at the time of writing this article. Of course, this may change over time, either up or down, with the change in the forint exchange rate.
